GLO-LO Video Corpus Part 1 (Block of Flats)
Kuvaus
GLO-LO Video Corpus Part 1 is part of a broader Video Corpus of talk and interaction collected as part of the research project Globalizing construction work and local language practices. The project investigates local language practices at construction sites in Finland and analyses how construction workers coordinate their work tasks by using linguistic and bodily resources. The research method used is conversation analysis. The results of the project provide new understanding on the role of language in the organization of physical and manual work.
GLO-LO Video Corpus Part 1 includes video recordings collected at a large construction site where a block of flats is being built. The video recordings focus on the work interactions of a group of builders and element installers. There are six focal participants who wore personal microphones connected to the video cameras. In addition, other workers occasionally appear in the videos. The primary language of the interactions is Finnish, though English is also used occasionally.
The video recordings were collected in November 2021 using two to three cameras. One or two of the cameras were hand-held by researchers collecting the data, while one was placed on a tripod. One of the hand-held cameras was connected to the microphones worn by the focal workers. The researcher holding this camera followed the workers and captured their work interactions. The camera placed on the tripod filmed a wider view of the construction site, and it was not connected to external microphones.
The work interactions were filmed on 13 different days, and altogether the corpus includes 84 hours of video recordings, which equals approximately 0.7 terabytes.
The recordings were supplemented by ethnographic fieldnotes by the researchers who recorded the interactions. The researchers visited the site on 35 different days between November 2021 and August 2022, wrote ethnographic fieldnotes based on their observations of interaction and language use, as well as the progress of the work, and took approximately 1300 photographs of the building and of written texts on different surfaces.
