Irradiation damage and fusion plasma fuel retention of fusion reactor plasma-facing materials

Rahoitetun hankkeen kuvaus

The research will focus on fusion plasma fuel retention in future nuclear fusion reactor plasma-facing materials. Tritium, a radioactive isotope, can get trapped in fusion reactor materials and render them radioactive. This will harm reactor operation and maintenance. We focus on the trapping mechanisms to understand and minimize the tritium trapping in future fusion reactors. The research will focus on two main points experimentally: tritium trap site formation in tungsten during neutron irradiation and the effect of boron on tritium retention in the wall materials. These topics are very relevant among the international community studying plasma-facing materials of fusion reactors and currently important for the future fusion reactor projects to proceed.
