Researching Effective Language Game Design for Immigrant Integration (REDIT)

Rahoitetun hankkeen kuvaus

Project REDIT at Åbo Akademi aims to improve the lives of immigrants in Finland through education. They intend to do this by creating and researching a digital language learning game that bolsters essential linguistic and cultural knowledge and then making it available to classrooms throughout Finland. The digital learning game, named Sprok, will provide an efficient and alternative language learning method based on solid academic research and content based on the Finnish national curriculum. Sprok has several unique features including it being based on the most current academic knowledge which will ensure that its features are not only educational but also fun. Finnish curricula make up the core of Sprok’s content and because of this, it will be easy to use in any language class as an educational supplement. The teaching back-end will be able to tell the teacher not only where a specific student is having trouble with the language, but also how the class is progressing as a whole. This allows them to provide a more personalized educational experience while saving precious time. Students' learning will be supported by a learning algorithm that will assist them in their journey towards integration, a journey that the game makes collaborative, practical, and fun. Lastly, this tool can be used by anyone regardless of their mother tongue because it will use Swedish to teach Swedish. Our intent with Sprok is to help immigrants find success in the world’s happiest nation.
