Creating Career Success: Long-term Career Impacts of Different Types of International Work Experiences
Rahoitetun hankkeen kuvaus
The present application aims to support the conclusion of my Ph.D. research program at the University of Vaasa. As a Ph.D. candidate, I hold one of the 15 Ph.D. positions funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action "Global mobility of employees" (GLOMO), an international research project that is part of the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. In particular I am conducting research about the career success of international professionals (GLOMO subproject 4), under the supervision of Professor Vesa Suutari (University of Vaasa, Finland) and Professor Michael Dickmann (Cranfield University, UK). For more information about the GLOMO project, please visit its official website (https://glomo.eu/).
The GLOMO project began in September 2018, and it will be coming to an end in August 2021. So far, we have achieved several milestones, including a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) paper that was submitted and accepted for review at the highly-regarded Human Resource Management Review (HRMR) journal, which received a top ranking of 4 in the Chartered Association of Business Schools (ABS) Journal Guide. On that account, we have already submitted a revised version of the article, according to the feedback we received from the journal’s reviewers. Furthermore, our SLR was accepted and presented at six different conferences, including EURAM 2020 and AOM 2020 (please find the complete list of conferences in APPENDIX A).
Based on the gaps identified in the SLR, we have since designed three empirical papers (using quantitative and qualitative methods) that will be further detailed in the subsequent sections of this application. We successfully collected the empirical data needed for these papers in 2020, through a follow-up survey with two samples of expatriates (previously involved in a study in 2015/2016). It is also important to note that we cooperated with two Finnish labor unions to perform our survey: the Finnish Business School Graduates and Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland TEK. At present, we are in the process of analyzing the data, although a draft of the first empirical paper was already submitted to EURAM 2021 on the 12th of January.
In short, during the course of the GLOMO project we have completed a SLR paper, designed three empirical studies, and completed the data collection process. At this point, we would greatly appreciate receiving support from the KAUTE Grant in order to complete the remaining empirical papers. Once again, we are targeting high-ranking academic journals (at least in the ABS level 3) to ensure the quality and impact of our publications, much like we did with our SLR. This may naturally lengthen the review and publication processes, however.
All in all, the KAUTE Grant would be a crucial step in completing my Ph.D. at the University of Vaasa. Your support would also allow me to leverage the added expertise and research networks that I acquired during GLOMO, in order to produce high-level academic contributions in the International Human Resource Management field. For all of these reasons, I would like to thank you for considering my application. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, or if you need any additional information.
