Boost aims at designing, building, and implementing biodiversity offsetting system grounded on scientific knowledge in Finland. The project's implementation relies on transdisciplinary research as well as on joint development of the offsetting system with public administration and practical stakeholders. The key outcomes of the project at the end of the first funding period include direct influence on legislation that enabled biodiversity offsetting, the construction of practical tools for facilitating offsets in Finland, and the testing of offsetting and the related practices in collaboration with the relevant stakeholders. Throughout its operation, the project and its researchers have become leading experts in biodiversity offsetting in Finland. In the future, Boost seeks to strengthen and research the role of biodiversity offsetting in society, clarify its link to the mitigation hierarchy, and to integrate the direct and indirect impacts on biodiversity into offsetting ideas.
