Metsätuhohyönteisten massaesiintymien torjunta genomiikan aikakaudella: uusia työkaluja mäntypistiäisten genomista
Rahoitetun hankkeen kuvaus
Understanding outbreaks of forest pest insects has become increasingly important as mass outbreaks occur more and more frequently. With genomic methods constantly advancing, it is timely to incorporate genomics for improved knowledge and management of outbreaking pest insects. In this project at the University of Eastern Finland, I will employ whole genome sequencing and population genomics to explore the genetic basis of adaptations and drivers of outbreaks of the common pine sawfly. This severe pest on pine trees caused the largest insect-driven forest damage in Finland during mass outbreaks in 1998-2002. My research will help to develop appropriate applications to mitigate the impacts of the common pine sawfly. Firstly, I will provide tools for genetic monitoring of population growth prior to forest damage. Ultimately, I aim at identifying genetic targets for designing new biological control strategies for diprionid pest species.
