QUAntification of Spectral and Angular characteristics of extreme solar eRuptive Events (QUASARE)

Rahoitetun hankkeen kuvaus

QUASARE aims to quantify eruptive solar events i.e. their energy spectra and angular distributions, using neutron monitor and space-borne data, and a catalogue will be created. Using a statistical analysis we will unveil and quantify their acceleration mechanisms. Subsequently, the atmospheric radiation environment will be evaluated. The increased exposure to aircrew and passengers is of a particular interest during solar eruptive events. The objectives of the proposal will be achieved on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations using a supercomputing calculations. A convenient proxy for the exposure to cosmic radiation will be incorporated in an existing tool like AVIDOS of Space Weather service available through the Space Situational Awareness. The research will be performed in Sodänkyla geophysical observatory (Oulu unit), in a team possessing a world recognized expertise in the field of modeling of cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere of the Earth.
